My wife and I have been discussing dropping our cable company because spending over $140 a month on cable and internet isn't sitting well with us since they like to jack up the rates on us every other year.
Where looking at our options, we love our HBO shows like boardwalk empire and our weekly cable shows like house and the walking dead, so we don't want to lose miss out on them.
I've herd many people are using netflix and its relatively cheap $8 a month with unlimited viewing of movies and TV shows, we would obviously keep our internet with the provider and stream through our built computer or laptop to the TV.
Is anybody else doing this? If so how is it working out for you? Or if you have any other suggestions I would be open to them.

Netflix isn't tv, and if your fine with waiting like a year to get it streaming then ok. Majority of all the instant queue is not current. Yes you can get DVDs but at $8 that's 1 at a time.
If I could get HD local channels and add on the channels i actually watch it might be a little cheaper but not by much

A buddy of mine has a cable card on his computer he uses netflix for hbo sieries, and uses hulu.com or just streams through the network web site. He's been doing it for years.

when i was living alone i didnt have cable or any tv for that matter just my netflixs and internet to stream to my tv...but then again i dont like to watch tv at all, i think its a waste of time but thats just me... the way i look at it is you pay for cable to watch the same crap that is on regular tv 90% comericals and 10% the show your watching...in the case of HBO thats differnt, i bet you would save money by buying the seanson of the tv shows on dvd...

i use the following..
- Top tier internet plan from Cox.. 55mbps.. - $89.99 a month, you can probably get by with a smaller plan though.. 90% of my time at home is spent in front of a screen so i felt it was worth the extra coin for the internet .. i do notice differences between their plans.. keep in mind with this plan you will need a docsis 3.0 modem which runs $100...
- Netflix for any streaming movie i want to watch or older show - don't use this much anymore though, ill probably cancel in the next month
- Whatever netflix doesnt have yet (new shows, or movies) i download from demonoid.me - bluray rips, tv shows are up day after they air and take approx 1-3 hours to download depending on seed quality, file size, and what ever else i am downloading.
- ps3 store to rent movies if needed
- Redbox for any physical movies i want to watch, mostly new stuff.
- Digital Antenna with old school bunny ears to get HD basic channels, 3, 5, 10, 15, 45, 61 .. most are in 720p, some are in 1080p.. even get to watch cardinals games on sunday in most cases.
- NEver used roku, i have used the boxee app on a windows machine in my living room but thats more of a media server and not a media provider.
- i did like boxee, it streamed pandora, netflix, all my iso movise, all my bluray rips it did everything really.. plus came with an app for my android phone to use it as a remote
- i use my ps3 as my UPNP media device, it plays all the stuff i need.

So the end result is I went with Directv, got a great package deal for half of my cable bill, also I kept Mediacom for internet the only other thing that was available was qwest and I don't think I could handle there 1.5mbps service... Mediacom has a 12mbps for 49.99 a month so I kept that.

Ive contemplated DirectTV, but the cost vs benefit wasn't too great..

i have cox cable at my house. the actual cable tv sucks, the picture quality is just plain garbage. i rarely watch tv and if i do im fine with the late night shows on regular tv (HD). as far as im concerned just having a decent internet connection is fine for me, stream netflix or hulu. most of the time i just surf the net. i think cable tv is slowly dying, younger generation would rather choose what they want to watch when they want to watch and not pay out the ass for terrible quality tv/programs
